Bombers Fall to Miners

Bombers Fall to Miners

After Dubois County exploded for 29 runs over their past two games, the Bombers bag of clutch hits was running on empty last night as they fell to the Madisonville Miners 5-2 at League Stadium.

Reece Kleinhelter (Jasper/USI) got the starting nod from Bombers Head Coach Andy Lasher. Kleinhelter turned in his best outing of the season, holding the Miners scoreless on just one hit over the first five innings.

Meanwhile, the Miners went to their bullpen early. The pair of Miner hurlers also shut down the Bomber offense through five.

Both teams broke through in the sixth frame. After retiring the first two batters, Kleinhelter couldn’t find the third out, issuing a walk, a pair of hits, a hit batsman and another walk before being pulled in favor of Evan Hall (Transylvania U.) with Madisonville up 2-0.

Dubois County answered with a run of their own in the bottom of the sixth.  Sam Mudd (USI) coaxed a leadoff walk. He came around to score on a Nick Gonzales (New Mexico St) double after advancing on a single by Evan Kahre (Olney Central).

After Madisonville added two more in the seventh, the Bombers scored a run in the eighth to cut the lead to 4-2. Tanner Craig (U. of Evansville) reached on a fielder’s choice, then proceeded around the bases on three wild pitches.

The Miners added a run in the ninth to net the 5-2 final tally.

Gonzales spearheaded the Bomber offense again, going 3-for-4 with a pair of doubles. Kahre added a double and a single. Evan Aders (Jasper/U. of Evansville) lined a pinch-hit double.

Outstanding defensive plays were turned in by Gonzales, Kahre, Trevor Ricker (USI), and Payton Mattingly (Southridge/Asbury College). Catcher Chase Andrews (Lee U.) cut down a pair of Miners attempting to steal.

After reeling off 8 wins in 10 games to climb to .500, the Bombers season record falls to 8-9. They will play in Muhlenberg County tonight before returning home Saturday to square off against the Western Division-leading Hoptown Hoppers.

The Flying Houndz, a great family-oriented special attraction will be on hand for Saturday’s 7 PM first pitch.
