Bombers Continue Winning Ways

The Dubois County Bombers picked up their third straight win on this Father’s Day weekend, downing the stubborn Madisonville Miners 6-3.

The Bombers opened the scoring in the third inning. After Miner starter Jackson Everman walked the first two batters, Caleb Lonkard bunted them into scoring position. Centerfielder Glenn Jones followed with a double, bringing Mitch Doucette and Joe Redburn home. One out later, Dane Giesler singled in Jones. The Bombers had an early 3-0 advantage.

Mike Steele came out of the Miner bullpen to relieve Everman. Steele held the Bombers scoreless until the seventh. Meanwhile, the Miners offense started chipping away immediately.

Nick Calandra doubled to lead off the fourth and scored on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Jake Perry.

Tyler Woolbright singled to lead off the fifth, and similarly scored on a sacrifice fly by Adam Schuster.

The Miners scored for the third consecutive inning when Jake Perry doubled in Cory Finkler, tying the game in the top of the sixth.

At this point, both starters were out of the game and off the hook as far as any decision was concerned.

The Bombers regained the lead in the seventh inning when Caleb Lonkard singled in Doucette who had been hit by a pitch. Lonkard came around to score on a Madisonville error later in the inning, making the score 5-3.

Dubois County added an insurance run in the eighth. Doucette singled to score Sturino who had walked and stolen second.

While the Bombers were batting in the eighth, Nick Gobert was loosening up in the pen. As Madisonville came up for their last at-bats, Gobert moved from third base to the mound, pitching the ninth. He retired the Miners in order.

The Bombers had a number of defensive gems on this day. Reliever Dru Sebastian and catcher Doucette both erased Minors from first base with pickoff throws. Two other Miners were tagged out between third and home, one by Doucette at the plate; the other was chased down by Gobert.

Sebastian gets the win in relief, his second victory out of the bullpen this weekend. Gobert gets his first save of the season. Steele takes the loss for the Miners. His record now stands at 0-2.

The victory improves the Bombers record to 6-7. It is the third consecutive win for Dubois County, and their fourth straight home victory. It moves the Bombers into sole possession of third place.

The Minors continue to battle teams tough, but fall to 0-12 on the season.
