Bombers Drop First Game of Series to Owensboro

The Dubois County Bombers opened their best-of-3 OVL Eastern Division Finals series at Owensboro last night, dropping an 8-3 decision.

The game was reminiscent of the first week of the season when Bomber hurlers control was not up to par. Bomber pitchers issued a dozen walks, with five of them coming around to score.

The Bombers outhit Owensboro 7-4, but the free passes produced too many opportunities for the RiverDawgs who finished the regular season with the league’s best record.

The game was tight early on. The Bombers led 1-0 after Nick Gonzales homered in the first.

Ben Wilcoxson added another round-tripper in the fourth inning, putting Dubois County back on top 3-2.

Then came the fateful bottom of the fourth when 3 walks, a hit batter, and a Bomber fielding miscue contributed to five Owensboro runs, putting the RiverDawgs up 7-3.

Dubois County only mounted one more legitimate threat. In the fifth, Gonzales scampered safely to first on a dropped third strike. John McDonald singled to put Bombers on the corners with nobody out. But Owensboro’s Cam Curry struck out the next two batters, and a foul pop ended the inning.

The series shifts to League Stadium tonight for game two of the series. The Bombers need a win to force a deciding game three back in Owensboro on Thursday.

The winner of the series will square off against the Hoptown Hoppers starting Friday night. The Hoppers repeated their regular season division title by closing out the Paducah Chiefs last night 11-7 to sweep the best-of-three set.
