Bombers top Miners 3-2

The Dubois County Bombers rode the strong right arm of Ryan Dills to a road win in Madisonville. Dills, an Evansville North product who pitches for Olney Central JC, limited the Miners to three hits in seven frames, notching 10 strikeouts and walking none in a stellar performance.

The Bombers struck first, scoring in the third inning without benefit of a hit. Tanner Wood (Ohio University) reached on an error to lead off the inning. He made the most of the opportunity, stealing both second and third, before coming into score on another Miner error.

The Miners answered with a pair in the bottom of the inning. Josh Wetzel tripled to lead off the inning and stole home. With two down, Nick Calandra also tripled, coming home on a wild pitch.

The score remained 2-1 in the Miners favor until the 7th. Nicholas Barrientos (Danville, Indiana CC) doubled with one down, and moved to third base on a single by Joe Redburn (Castle HS and U of Evansville). The Miners pitcher balked in Barrientos, advancing Redburn to second. Dayton Flyer Glenn Jones drove in Redburn to give the Bombers the final 3-2 advantage.

Meanwhile, Dills from Evansville North and Olney Central JC, was settling into a rhythm. After Calandra’s third-inning triple, the Miners did not get another hit. Dills retired 13 consecutive Madisonville hitters, 8 of them by strikeout during that span. He turned it over to the bullpen after the seventh inning.

Tyler Nichols (USI) pitched a scoreless eighth for the Bombers and Brandon Hicks (Murray St.) retired the Miners in order in the ninth. Hicks has earned the save in both Bomber victories.

The Bombers are now 2-3 on the season and are tied for third in the five-team Ohio Valley League. The Miners fall to 0-6.

The first-place Hoptown Hoppers (7-0) come to town tonight. Game time is 6:00 at League Stadium.
